The Power of Purpose

When was the last time you stopped long enough to ask yourself a simple, yet profound question:

What is my purpose?

Most of us spend years pursuing goals, building careers, raising families, and checking items off our to-do lists. Yet many people eventually discover that achievement alone does not create fulfillment. Purpose does.

Purpose is more than a career, a title, or a role. It is the reason behind what you do. It is the thread that connects your values, strengths, experiences, and passions into a life that is both meaningful and impactful. As I often tell coaching clients, purpose fuels your days, anchors your decisions, directs your steps, and ignites the sparkle in your eye.

One of my favorite ways to begin a conversation about purpose is with a challenging question:

If you could solve one problem in the world, what would it be, and why?

There isn't a right or wrong answer. The question simply reveals what matters most to you. Our deepest concerns often point us toward our greatest calling.

Discovering purpose also requires honest self-reflection. Consider these questions:

• What are my greatest strengths?
• What values do I hold most dear?
• What experiences have shaped me?
• What activities make me feel most alive?

The answers often reveal patterns we have overlooked. They help us understand not only what we are good at, but also what energizes us and how we are uniquely equipped to serve others.

Living with purpose is not reserved for nonprofit leaders, teachers, or missionaries. Purpose can be expressed in every profession. An accountant may bring peace and clarity to families through sound financial guidance. A business leader may create opportunities for employees to thrive. A parent may shape the next generation through love, wisdom, and encouragement. Purpose is less about what you do and more about why you do it.

Purpose also becomes our compass when life becomes complicated. Every day we make countless decisions about how we spend our time, energy, and attention. Those choices either move us closer to living in alignment with our purpose or further away from it.

The good news is that living with purpose does not require dramatic life changes. It begins with one intentional step. Identify one small action you can take in the next 48 hours that reflects the person you want to become. Then take another tomorrow. Purpose is not discovered in a single moment. It is lived through consistent choices that align with who you are and what matters most.

So today, pause for a few moments. Reflect on your gifts, your passions, and the difference you hope to make. Your purpose has likely been speaking to you all along.

The question is not whether you have one.

The question is whether you are living it.
