A Disrupted Routine
I like my routine. Whether in my personal life or professional world, routine keeps me grounded, productive, and on track with essential tasks. But life, as we know, doesn’t always respect our plans. Disruptions, whether planned or unexpected, can easily throw us off course. The key is not to resist, but to intentionally adapt. Recently, both my personal and work routines were disrupted, one planned, the other not. Let me tell you what happened and how I navigated the upheaval.
I try to maintain a balanced exercise routine, and while I have a solid rhythm, I’ll admit, it’s easy for me to veer off course, and a bit difficult to get back once I stray. A planned family trip to Ohio meant I would miss my regular workouts. Additionally, we unexpectedly adopted a puppy, which required a two-day trip to North Carolina and a significant shift in focus upon our return home. My carefully laid-out days? Out the window. But here’s what helped me regain my footing,
Plan When You Can
If you know a disruption is coming, do what you can to front-load your responsibilities. I usually spend one day a week writing blog content and scheduling social media posts. Knowing I’d be unavailable for several days, I prepared two weeks' worth in advance.
This same principle can apply to your work calendar. If you expect next week to be packed with vendor meetings, can you consolidate one-on-one check-ins with your team into a group meeting this week? Or prepare key reports or communications in advance? A little foresight goes a long way in preventing things from spiraling out of control.
Stay Flexible, and Kind to Yourself
Disruptions can be frustrating, especially for those of us who thrive on structure. But rigidity can lead to unnecessary stress or even paralysis. The truth is, plans sometimes need to be modified.
I fully intended to jump right back into my regular fitness schedule once we brought the puppy home. But her demands on my time and attention made that unrealistic. Instead, I replaced my workouts with long daily walks with her. While not as intense, it still kept me moving, and allowed us both to build a new routine together.
This kind of flexibility also applies at work. Say your morning ritual involves getting in early to review your calendar, emails, and to-do list. However, this week, vendor meetings are scheduled to start promptly at 8 a.m. Rather than giving up the practice altogether, reschedule it to lunch or late afternoon. Keep the intention, even if the timing has to change.
Disruption is Inevitable
Ultimately, routine is a tool that exists to serve us, not the other way around. When life shifts, and it will, your ability to adapt while preserving your core priorities is what keeps you moving forward. Whether it’s a puppy, a business trip, or a curveball from life, disruption doesn’t have to derail you. With a bit of planning and a lot of grace, you can stay grounded, no matter what shakes up your routine. Do you want some help setting up a routine or planning for that inevitable disruption?
